Description
Theatre broadside measuring an astonishing 10‘ x 8‘!This is a rare wood block print. Made by Calhoun print Hartford Connecticut. The company is well-known for making theatrical broadsides and scenery for productions throughout the 19th century. Many prints by this company sell between ,000 and ,000 in good condition.
The poster depicts a boy next to a bucket of peaches, standing on the porch of a broken down grocery store. Next to him is his father next to his shackled horse, with an anchor attached to its leg.
This was a popular story around the time of Huckleberry Finn and featured a boy and his family and their exploits. Largely forgotten today.
Poor shape as pictured. Missing about a third of it but still a very cool piece of theater history. Based on the popular book called Peck’s Bad Boy from mid-late 19th century.
On the back of one of the folios is inscribed in pencil that it was to be placed on a grocery store billboard, or the side of a grocery store. Possibly in Philadelphia or New York. Even at that time it is mentioned as having been heavily torn so perhaps this is how it has “survived” so many years, since it was never pasted/attached to a building!
