Theater Broadside Ad-from March, 1819-Rare Find-Two Plays . Broadsides were paper ads put up on walls or posts. This one will be 200 years old in March, 2019. They are rare as they were not meant to last long and were subject to the weather outside. This one was probably for a theater in either Baltimore or Philadelphia. The first play is "Bertram" or "The Castle of St. Aldobrand", a tragedy in 5 acts starring the Sarah and Frederick Wheatley. Mrs. Wheatley (1790-1854?) was known for her portrayal of old women. It also starred James William Wallack (1794-1864), Anglo-American actor and stage manager. The second play, "The Sleeping Drought" was a two act farce set from dusk to daylight near the Italian city of Padua. An interesting example of American theater. Condition is good considering age and purpose of usage. There are stains, and the broadside has holes on the left indicating it was sewn in to a book at one time. The edges are rather feathered as the paper is rag paper. This will come in a plastic sleeve reinforced with cardboard. Email with questions.
